Do you really like Family Tarzan s Disney ?
This book masquerades as being sympathetic to the Black maids in Jackson, Mississippi in the early 1960’s but consider what happens in it. A White woman in the deep South when Jim Crow is rampant interviews Black maids in order to compile a book that will bring the maids’ stories to the attention of the larger world (nb. the format that the Blacks need the White leader). BUT, in spite of this supposedly noble purpose, in fact the self-interested White woman risks nothing she cares about while the Black women she pulls into her project risk everything. And sure enough, by the end, the book about the maids’ stories gets her the job in NYC she was after all along, while the Black maids are left in Jackson to face danger in the wake of the book’s publication.
