You Eat You What beta

Having written a reference work on food myself, I fully realize how difficult it is to research and write such a book as this, and how easy it is to find fault and criticize. And if I had seen the original edition of this book when it was first published, I probably would have found it valuable and interesting. If it had been heavily revised and brought up to date, it still might be. But it isn’t. I have been reading the chapter on Iceland and I have to say that it is very misleading. What is being described – and not always correctly – is Iceland in the 1950s and 1960s. A few examples – there are many more in the text:

“Some homes have refrigerators with freezers” (yes, about 98% of them) “but most manage with cold closets.” I’m the only person I know who has a cold larder (and a refrigerator and a freezer, too). Refrigerators have been in most homes here since the early 1960s at least. “Fresh fruits are scarce”. They haven’t been scarce for the last 30 years at least. These days you can even get exotic fruits like ramboutan and mangosteen. “Cattle are mainly used for dairy products, rarely for beef.” Beef is now as common as lamb. “Pigs are all but nonexistent; pork is rare and expensive and said to have a fishy taste …” Now common, inexpensive by Icelandic standards and quite good. “Icelanders have a deeply rooted objection to eating birds of any type” – oh, come on, chicken was not much eaten but not because people didn’t like it, rather because it wasn’t economical to raise the birds on imported grain. They are very popular now. And wild birds have always been eaten – in some regions they were a large part of the diet. “… margarine and butter (all unsalted)”. Totally wrong. Both margarine and butter is almost always salted. “Salt is seldom added (to food)” Wrong. Salt is added to most savory food and many people salt their food liberally. “Preferring to talk in separate groups, men and women disperse after the meal, it still being

I agree with the 5-star reviews except for the vocals. This CD would be perfect if it weren’t for the weird-sounding voice. It’s also bad in other Annihilator albums too. I am sure this is the main reason Annihilator isn’t as popular as we all wanted it to be. Just listen to the samples above and check for yourself. And the lyrics suck too, with repetitive annoying rhymes. But, hey, the guitar is awesome, the speed is as fast as it should be, with original rythms. All songs kick ass, specially “Schizos” and “Loving the Sinner”.

Your pen starts moving on its own and tells you it’s God and you believe it? Are you kidding me? Gullible much?

If there is a God, then this isn’t Him. If there is a Satan, then he’s definitely a ghost author here.

Even with an open mind, this book killed more brain cells than I could afford. God already wrote a love letter that explains His heart. It runs from Genesis to Revelation. Check it out some time.

In the almost-five years since I first read this book, my readerly worldview has shifted drastically. Twilight wasn’t wholly responsible for that change, but it was a catalyst. I once thought this book was RealRealGood, as in “read it multiple times, then loan it out to your five best friends” good (and my friends loaned it to other friends..no telling how many sets of eye-tracks are on my worn out copy). Now, I have a metric ton of problems with Twilight, though I still find it entertaining.

Appealing romantic elements: Love stories serve up an enjoyable, vicarious slice of somebody’s happily ever after, and Twilight is extra-loved because it is almost purely a romance–seriously, the plot and action in the first book feel like they were added at the last minute, like the sprinkle cheese on a casserole. (Note: In the next two books, we get a lot more plot and forward momentum, and a lot less people-sitting-around-falling-in-love, which is a more desirable ratio, IMO) It’s wish fulfillment, but not necessarily in a bad sense. In a certain fashion, love stories are an encouragement, because in real life, a girl fancies a guy and wonders if he likes her back, and in a YA novel the answer is invariably a big “YES”. There’s something comforting about that level of assurance, and it’s not ridiculous to get warm, fuzzy feelings when reading love stories.

However….(Unappealing romantic elements)

Why the love? Bella and Edward’s love story is problematic. I’m going to skip over any co-dependency or emotional abuse issues, and go straight to my big problem with them: I don’t know why they love each other. Sure, “love” is hard to define, but when the characters say they love each other so soon and so emphatically after they meet, it makes one question how they formed such a strong attachment so quickly. His attraction seems based on her level of mystery. Bella is the Unattainable for Edward, because she smells like bacony freesia (or whatever scent it is that makes you w

This was a really good, enjoyable, authentic, endearing book. Thoroughly enjoyable read. One of a kind, leaves you wanting more of the circus on the rails of the depression era. I also love first-person novels that stay on plot and Gruen doesn’t disappoint there.

I TOTALLY disagree with another reviewer who said Gruen over-anthropomophized and over-romanticized the animals in the story! Hardly. If anything, if Jacob is a vet, we read very little of him doing his job in context of the story. And anyone who’s around animals or has worked with animals can hardly fail to form emotional attachments to them.

When I finished WATER FOR ELEPHANTS, I like I felt when I finished reading FRIED GREEN TOMATOES AT THE WHISTLE STOP CAFE and SEABISCUIT.

The Furminator deShedding tool really works. I have purchased at least 4 other brushes in the past and none of them worked on my Pug, they would irritate her skin. With the Furminator she sits and loves the combing. No more pug hair all over my clothes and furniture. I highly recommend this product.

The of Humanism Arrogance beta

Dr. Ehrenfeld counsels a balance of emotion and reason, and models exactly what he advises, in a moving and intelligent analysis of much of what we face on a broad variety of fronts, in the environment, education and child-rearing, biotechnology and politics. His courageous review of all facets underlying our modern “unease” and his attempt to achieve wisdom, even beyond knowledge, is noteworthy and closely adheres to reality. The writing is eloquent and incisive, and evokes the highest capacities in the reader and thinker to join the dialogue with heart and mind open and awake. Thank you for a brave, powerful and important consideration of how to where we are proceeding.

I purchased this to monitor my Heart Rate and Calories burned while taking indoor cycling classes or running on the treadmill.
