At the age of seventeen, most adolescents have to make a decision as to what they will do with their life. Holden Caulfield, the protagonist of J.D. Salinger’s novel The Catcher in the Rye taking place in New York in the 1950’s, is no different. He decides that he has to “catch everybody if they start to go over a cliff – I mean if they’re running and they don’t look where they’re going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That’s all I’d do all day. I’d just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know it’s crazy, but that’s the only thing I’d really like to be”. Holden is in the process of transitioning into adulthood; however, he wants to preserve his childhood innocence. He watched as his brother Allie died of leukemia at a young age and can’t bear to think of anyone else missing out on the virtues of childhood. He wants to protect his sister Phoebe from the evil adult world as he encourages her to ride the carousel. Holden himself attempts to venture into society, but can never seem to manage. Going out late at night, drinking, and getting involved with prostitutes are things that Holden tries to do to make the difficult transition. However, Holden faces many internal conflicts that prevent him from entering adulthood. He has flunked out of four preparatory schools and feels abandoned by his parents because he knows they will just send him off to another one without trying to understand the problem. Holden continues to search for his identity, and an answer to where the ducks go when the lagoon in Central Park freezes. All readers will be able to relate to Holden’s frustrations, disappointments, thoughts, and decisions. He proves himself to be complex, sharing the mentality of teenagers today. The audience can connect to Holden’s feelings of isolation and fear of growing up. The theme of Salinger’s book is timeless because Holden’s concerns match those of teenagers everywhere in every era. I had heard many good things about this novel with many recommendations that, as a Harry Potter fan, I would enjoy it. I’m happy to say that it lived up to all of the hype. This is yet another example of a fine writer producing children’s literature that’s not all that childish. Like a really well-done cartoon, there’s plenty in its pages to entertain and amuse children and many references that will go straight over their heads but that adults will enjoy.

The language Colfer uses is really wonderful. He doesn’t try to dumb it down and the vocabulary is colorful and would be a nice challenge for younger children and yet it’s not so academic that it becomes daunting. Colfer uses colorful language and does an excellent job of setting the scene and creating believable and fun dialogue.

The best thing about this book, though, is Colfer’s prodigious imagination. Artemis is a very fun and unexpected character and the Butlers were also a lot of fun, particularly Julia with her penchant for wrestling. Colfer’s twists on traditional folklore and fairytale creatures is very innovative and his take on how the “Mud People” stereotype fairies, elves, and dwarves was a riot. Colfer is very adept at using such satire to great effect and while kids will find it funny, adults will appreciate how Colfer pokes fun at our own world.

Overall, this book is a great deal of fun and I look very forward to reading the next installment.

Easy to put on the dashboard, and holding on it well, this item does its purpose perfectly.
The design has more to be desired.
Why dose the Garmin Company develop more simple and advanced design?
The four sided bean bags seem to ruin the simplicity and perfect usage.
Except the design problem, everything is O.K. with me, and I would recommend it to my friends.
USB Sync Charge Cable

In the almost-five years since I first read this book, my readerly worldview has shifted drastically. Twilight wasn’t wholly responsible for that change, but it was a catalyst. I once thought this book was RealRealGood, as in “read it multiple times, then loan it out to your five best friends” good (and my friends loaned it to other friends..no telling how many sets of eye-tracks are on my worn out copy). Now, I have a metric ton of problems with Twilight, though I still find it entertaining.

Appealing romantic elements: Love stories serve up an enjoyable, vicarious slice of somebody’s happily ever after, and Twilight is extra-loved because it is almost purely a romance–seriously, the plot and action in the first book feel like they were added at the last minute, like the sprinkle cheese on a casserole. (Note: In the next two books, we get a lot more plot and forward momentum, and a lot less people-sitting-around-falling-in-love, which is a more desirable ratio, IMO) It’s wish fulfillment, but not necessarily in a bad sense. In a certain fashion, love stories are an encouragement, because in real life, a girl fancies a guy and wonders if he likes her back, and in a YA novel the answer is invariably a big “YES”. There’s something comforting about that level of assurance, and it’s not ridiculous to get warm, fuzzy feelings when reading love stories.

However….(Unappealing romantic elements)

Why the love? Bella and Edward’s love story is problematic. I’m going to skip over any co-dependency or emotional abuse issues, and go straight to my big problem with them: I don’t know why they love each other. Sure, “love” is hard to define, but when the characters say they love each other so soon and so emphatically after they meet, it makes one question how they formed such a strong attachment so quickly. I bought this because I bought a new laptop since I started going back to school. The laptop came with the 30 day trial, I liked it much better then the 2003 version I had been using so I decided to upgrade to the full package. Buying it through Amazon I saved a lot of money almost 50% less on here then in the big retail chain.
