I’m so glad I did, it’s wonderful.

Jacob Jankowski is 93 (hr thinks) and in an old folks home put out to pasture. He has an enthralling story inside him that many of us only wish we had. Dropping out of college and running away with the circus as a young man, his story unfolds as a true adventure.

The circus of the 30’s is the back drop for this wonderful yarn and we follow Jacob as he navigates his way around the people, the lore, the language and the pecking order. All the characters are colorful and each brings a dimension to the story that has the reader turning pages as fast as possible. I think I blew through this one in two days. I might have done it in one had I not had commitments I had to keep.

The story is interspersed with up to date goings on at the old folks home the aged Jankowski is a resident of but, you can just tell his heart is still on the circus train of his youth. The end of the book is perfect in its simplicity and “rightness”.

To say I thoroughly enjoyed this book would somehow understate the whole experience, to say I loved it would be closer to the truth. If you want something to read that will draw you in like a moth to a flame, this might just be the book. If you want to be taken back to a bygone age of Americana complete with all its misgivings and mayhem, this might be the story. If you want to immerse yourself in a great story that, I hope becomes a movie, this IS the book.

Well, you are wrong. The book I read was Artemis Fowl. This book is about a boy named Artemis Fowl, who tries to kidnap a fairy and demand a ransom. He kidnaps Captain Holly Short, a recon officer. Her superior, Commander Root, sends an LEP (Lower Elements Police) retrieval team to try to rescue Holly. Butler, Artemis’ bodyguard, is there to meet them. That is when things get a bit crazy. Trolls start breaking in. A dwarf starts digging his way in. There’s more…

I like this book, because of two reasons. First, the author really described the characters and the setting. Second, because he uses a lot of foreshadowing in the story. That is also bad, because he doesn’t tell you right away what Artemis’ plans are. But that is also good, because they leave you thinking “What is his plan?” If you are interested in magical creatures, kidnapping, magic, and series, then pick up this book and don’t put it down until you finish!

Once again Arron’s thoughts are provoking, stirring, and makes me examine my walk with Christ. As a Youth Minister I am always reading and being encouraged by other Christians in their writing, but Arron not only encourages, but challenges. As I look at my life and look at the people I socialize with most of the time it is with Christians, and while socializing (i.e. fellowship) is not inherently a bad thing, it is why and what I was called into. One of the best Chapters was Chapter 8 on the topic of “URGENCY”, Arron reminds us what Jesus talks about in Luke 10 ” The harvest is plentiful…” so many times we examine ourselves in the few of others, or we (well I being a Minister) examines churches and it can be depressing knowing your attending was 300 while the church done the street had 4 services with 300 per service, but Arron reminds me that there are so many people lost I need to stop worrying about the church down the street or the Christian sharing his faith, instead I need to pray for that church or that person and continue to reach people with the Gospel. Every Pastor, church leader, Elder, needs to read this book, needs to bring it to the attention of other leaders in the church, and then needs to take it to the church and get them to see that “eating with sinners”, building relationships with those not in the church, and taking the Gospel where other people are not willing to go is exactly what Jesus would want us to do. Thank you Arron for encouraging and challenging my walk with Christ.

Then throw him in a world of technologically superior fairies, and the fun can begin.

And this is really what Artemis Fowl is about, first and foremost: FUN.

Some might say it reverts too easily to stereotypes, but I am not sure whether this is actually a bad thing. Too much depth, too much complexity in character development, might have taken the umpf out of the sheer fun ride I’ve had in reading Artemis.

The basic idea of the book–for those new to Fowl’s world–is that there is an underground world of fairies who go to great pains to keep their existence a secret from the human upper world. Until Artemis, a young criminal master mind, tracks down the fairies and upsets the whole balance of the worlds above and below ground.

In summary: Don’t expect the symbolism of Narnia, the metaphysics of His Dark Materials, or the detail of Harry Potter. Artemis Fowl doesn’t have any of those. Instead, expect to be blasted away by the explosive energy of a fun novel.

This book is about a 12 year old criminal mastermind by the name of Artemis Fowl. For once we are actually on the side of the villain! Now, the book summary is a little bit misleading and sounds rather cheesy to me:
“These aren’t the fairies of bedtime stories. These fairies are armed and they’re dangerous.”
This does not do the book justice in my opinion. I would never have read the book if the librarian hadn’t recommended it. Many of the one star reviews go on and on about how there are so many typos. Well, in almost every book there are typos, and I found I didn’t notice them unless I was actually looking for them. Plus, I see them in Harry Potter, Nancy Drew, and many other noteworthy books.
I thought it was very nice to be rooting for the villain for once, and the fact that he wins in the end is even better. I love Butler the butler, and I thought how Eoin Colfer gave background info on every character was wonderful. I thought that he did a really good job describing the characters emotions and what motivates them. Artemis wants more money because he believes it will make him happier. Butler wants to be a good bodyguard, and Holly Short wants to please her commander and do a good job in LEPrecon, her job. Mulch (perhaps one of my top three favorite characters) just wants to escape prison, and he manages it!
I have recommended this book to several of my friends and they love it, also I think adults would enjoy it as well, my mother did. I thought that the ending was very well done with Artemis sacrificing half the gold to have Holly heal his mother, who is very sick, and doesn’t always recognize him. I also thought that Holly was a very well done character, and I enjoy seeing a girl portrayed as tough and smart. Overall a very good book, which has made it into my top ten books of all time.
